Custom Climbing Nets for Playgrounds: Net Floors, Rope Bridges and Rope Forests
Custom climbing nets turn open space into play space. A net can become a floor between two levels, a rope bridge between towers, a tunnel, a rope forest or a hammock for resting. Because every site is different, each Landrec net is designed for the space it will occupy, and it can be planned on its own or together with a custom slide. Here is how custom nets work, what they are made from, and how we have used them on real projects.
Types of Custom Climbing Nets
- Net floors: part of a deck or platform is replaced with a net, so children can climb, crawl or lie on it while light and sightlines stay open.
- Rope bridges: a net or rope span that links two towers or platforms.
- Net tunnels: an enclosed rope tunnel children crawl through.
- Climbing wall nets: a vertical net that leads up to a platform, a loft or the top of a slide.
- Rope forests: vertical ropes or nets set close together for weaving, swinging and climbing.
- Lounging nets: hammock-style nets for resting and gathering.
Net Materials
Landrec nets are made from either steel-core fiber rope or high-tenacity polypropylene (HTPP) netting. HTPP is lightweight and highly resistant to abrasion, and it holds up well to moisture and chemical exposure. Color and mesh size are chosen to suit the space and the age of the climbers. Because a net puts load into whatever it is anchored to, we coordinate structural review before fabrication.
Custom Nets on Our Projects
Gallagher Square at Petco Park, San Diego
At Gallagher Square, Landrec worked with the San Diego Padres and Larimer Design on a baseball-themed playground. Nets carry the theme: a giant pitcher’s mound net floor sits at the center, a bat rope forest gives children a place to weave and climb, and three bat-themed towers connect to a 35-foot baseball bat climbing sculpture. The playground also includes a spiral tunnel slide from a 16-foot deck and a curved tunnel slide from an 8-foot deck, both fabricated from 304L stainless steel and powder coated.
Yorba Linda Adventure Playground
With RJM Design and the City of Yorba Linda, Landrec revitalized a community playground that dates to the late 1980s. Two- to three-story towers are linked by three rope bridges designed to meet safety regulations while restricting entry points into a private area, and rope net tunnels and climbing nets run inside the towers.
Peter Schabarum Park, Hacienda Heights
For Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation, Landrec designed “Triple Tree Jam,” an inclusive treetop play structure for ages 5 to 12. Three large columns host a medley of rope obstacles, and children move through nets, ramps and rubber platforms as they climb through a simulated tree canopy.
KidSTREAM Children’s Museum, Camarillo
In KidSTREAM’s outdoor exhibit, designed with Sitio Landscape Architecture, visitors can climb timber elements such as a Y branch and Stump Steppers or relax in a Hypar Hammock.
Nets for Natural Play
Nets also pair with timber. The Wildwood™ Lazy Diamond is an inclusive net hammock anchored by rot-resistant Black Locust timber posts, a calm social space within a Wildwood™ timber play space.
Designing a Net With a Slide
When a net and a slide are planned as one feature, the net becomes the way up and the slide becomes the way down. The two share anchor points, guarding and landing zones, so they are designed as one structure. If you already have a slide, or a slide does not fit the space, a net can still turn a platform, loft or stairwell into play space. For homes, see our guide to indoor climbing nets and slides.
